When working to create light fixture components for their pieces, manufacturers must carefully consider the materials that they are working with to achieve their goals.
While working on their pieces, they will often favor using hardwoods like White Oak, Hard Maple, Soft Maple, and Walnut to create lighting components. These woods are known for their grain patterns, unique character, and versatility. Each species’ uniqueness influences both the aesthetics and overall strength of the light fixtures.
White Oak, for example, is known for its robustness and also imparts a rustic charm. Walnut, on the other hand, emits sophistication thanks to its rich, dark tones. Maple is prized for its light creamy color, smooth grain pattern, and ability to stain nicely. The species that is chosen will ultimately depend on the requirements of the manufacturer.
Light fixture components may be produced from a solid piece of wood. Depending on the finished size of the component, they may also be produced from laminated blanks or panels. The staves used for laminated blanks or panels are matched for color and continuity of grain before the laminating process. This process allows the manufacturer to produce parts much larger than those that could be produced from a single board or square.
Light Fixture Components – Customization and Capabilities
Wooden light fixture components are produced to exact specifications from simple pieces to highly engineered components. They are produced using a variety of different types of woodworking machinery. These range from hand lathes to high-speed CNC turning lathes for turned parts, to 3-12 axis CNC machining centers for simple shaped parts to extremely detailed shaped parts. At times, multiple machines may be incorporated for additional secondary operations.
Attention to detail when the components are being produced is very important. This ensures the wood component works with the fittings required for the assembly to produce the completed light fixture. Turned and/or shaped parts may then be routed with decorative grooves, drilled with crossbores, counterbores, or deep hole boring, sanded, or polished. After this step in the process, they are ready for the manufacturer to apply a finish.
Further customizations may include inlays of contrasting wood species. Custom staining, painting, and sealing techniques allow for a spectrum of colors to enhance completed fixtures. This visually enables these fixtures to seamlessly integrate into other decor.
